Alma Adams for North Carolina House of Representatives - District 58

Representative Alma Adams was a member of the faculty of Bennett College in Greensboro from 1972-2012 and served as professor of art; Director of the Art Gallery and manager of the college’s art collections.  She is the former Chairperson of the Department of Visual Arts and Humane Studies and Director of the Humanities Division.


Background:  Mother of two (2);  Grandmother of (4);  Professional Artist;  Retired Tenured Professor, Bennett College;  BS, MS NCA&T State University;  Ph.D. The Ohio State University;  Active member, New Zion  Missionary Baptist  Church.

Representative Alma S. Adams has served in the North Carolina General Assembly since 1994 when Governor James B. Hunt first appointed her. She was re-elected to her ninth term in November 2010 and is running for re-election to her 10th term in November, 2012.  Alma Adams has served in the North Carolina House for the past 19 ½ years addressing inequities and enhancing the quality of life for children, women, families and vulnerable populations.


In 1987 Adams was elected by the citizens of District 2 to represent North East Greensboro on the Greensboro City Council, where she served for nine (9) years until going to the North Carolina House in 1994. Prior to her service in the General Assembly, Adams served for one term on the Greensboro City School Board where she was a strong advocate for quality education and the first African American woman elected to that body.
